the lag that chases you

t won’t be for a while that i can remedy this, but man, i’m reaching the limits of my once blazingfast computer. this was the first new mac i ever got, i’ve been using second hand ones since i had my first on in ‘99 or 2000. and when i got this one (before this was my G3, got this in 2005)  it was superfast! i mean, you know, it’s still just as fast. but my purposes have changed. back then i was doing a lot of design work and that was mostly it. sure, i was recording music, too. and even with this, you’ll run into some moments where you overload the processor (yes only one, and that used to be standard, remember?) but overall, its a fine machine. and if you aren’t taxing it like i do, its a luxurious ride from A to Z.

but my purposes now are “power mac” purposes. studio recording, video editing, multiple inter-operating apps (work with each other is what i mean to say)  and of course, all the applications at the heart of my basic uses (Photoshop, Logic, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Studio) get bigger and more RAM hungry every iteration (and they’ve all bumped up since i got this), and so does the OS itself. i’m maxed out on RAM, now, and i already have two external hard drives attached, in addition to my two monitors. its the engine now that needs to be upgraded.

next is a Power Mac, but looking at that, its going to be at least 10 Gs for that badboy. insane. sure, it pretends to be $3Gs,  but that’s for basically a motherboard, a box, and thats it. if you want some real RAM into it,  HDs, a good video card, etc, you’re up to ten pretty easy. without even a second monitor! ugh. i mean, it will make a huge difference. no more waiting for the computer to do things after you’ve already told it to do them…this iMac uses up about five times the amount of time i’d use. i move fast, when i’m cooking, when i’m multitasking, and thats how i like it, i can get a lot done. but this messes up my whole rhythm!!! and wastes hours! agh. the amount of time i wait. and i really hate bogging down in either video or audio apps. real drag.

okay. i needed to vent.  its not a real big complaint. many people dont even have a rice bowl to blog in. but one day!!! one day i shall have all the right tools. meanwhile, i’ll make big clawing motions in the air as i wait for my computer to catch up with my slow human brain.
